SEO Myths You Need to Ignore

SEO has become the cornerstone of successful marketing strategies, helping businesses transform their online presence and attract more customers. However, with popularity, come myths. Unfortunately, there are many myths circulating about SEO, many of which can be hard to determine as fact or fiction. In this blog, we will expose some common myths about SEO that continue to confuse marketers and business owners.

1. SEO doesn’t matter

This one has to be one of the stupidest ones we’ve ever heard at Sherbet Donkey. This is definitely one worth clearly addressing and putting to bed.

If your business isn’t seeing traffic and you’re not quite sure why, the answer is probably because you’re not utilising SEO. If you’re looking at this and thinking, ‘well my business is getting traffic’, the likelihood is that it’s from word of mouth or returning customers. So, imagine what it would be like if you could open up your business to all those people searching for your product or service but are unable to find your business online. SEO is a brilliant marketing tool for any business. Improving your online visibility and becoming a trusted source of search engines can only positively impact your company.

 2. Keyword density doesn’t matter

Another statement that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you don’t know what keyword density is, simply put, it is the number of times a keyword appears on a webpage compared to the total number of words on that page.

There is no optimal keyword density, even Google has said so many times. Instead of focusing on how many times you’ve mentioned the keyword or phrase, focus more on writing naturally and being helpful with your content. Be sure to watch out for keyword stuffing (targeting a keyword so many times it can appear spammy to readers) as this can also negatively impact your SEO efforts.

3. Only target high-volume keywords

High-volume keywords are terms that attract thousands to millions of searches each month. These are usually shorter search phrases. High-volume keywords are typically more competitive than low-volume keywords. However, this doesn’t always mean targeting high-volume is the right thing to do. Low-volume keywords usually have less competition and are normally more specifically related to your business, rather than a generic term.

4. The more content, the better!

Although there is an obvious connection between publishing content frequently and content performance, it isn’t always the case that you will see better results. Google has actively come out and expressed that you shouldn’t just be creating content for the sake of it. Your content strategy should focus on your audience’s wants and needs.

seo content myths

5. All backlinks are good backlinks

A backlink is a link from one website to another, serving as a signal to search engines that others vouch for the content on your site. Backlinks are extremely important for SEO as search engines like Google see these as votes of confidence that your content is reliable, and this can lead to better rankings. This has fostered the SEO myth that all backlinks are valuable and that the more you have, the better. However, this isn’t always the case, not all backlinks are equal. Not all backlinks are beneficial because links from low-quality or irrelevant sites can harm your website’s search engine ranking. Search engines prioritise the quality and relevance of backlinks, penalising sites associated with spammy or manipulative link practices.

6. Keyword research isn’t important

There is a huge misconception that keyword research isn’t important for SEO. As most pages naturally rank for hundreds of keywords rather than specific phrases, is it any wonder this myth is still circulating when it comes to SEO? Keyword research remains a cornerstone of effective SEO strategies because it helps marketers understand the terms and phrases that consumers use to search for products or services. By identifying these keywords, businesses can tailor their content to match user intent, improve their search engine rankings and attract more relevant traffic to their sites.

7. SEO is a one-time task

Another one that makes us chuckle here at Sherbz. SEO isn’t just a one-time task; to truly see the benefits of SEO it must be an ongoing process, requiring continuous attention and adaptation. As search engine algorithms evolve and user behaviours change, strategies must be updated to maintain or improve rankings. Regularly analysing performance data, updating content, refining keywords and adapting to new SEO trends are essential for staying competitive in search results.

8. The layout of the page doesn’t affect SEO

It’s almost mad to think it but there are still people out there who think website design has nothing to do with search optimisation. The layout of a web page can significantly impact a business’s SEO performance. A well-structured layout helps search engines understand the hierarchy and content of a page, which is crucial for indexing. User-friendly layouts that facilitate easy navigation and quick access to important information also reduce bounce rates and increase the time visitors spend on the site, both of which are favourable signals to search engines.

mobile responsiveness seo myths

9. Mobile responsiveness isn’t relevant

Only creating a website that looks good on a desktop and not on other devices such as mobiles is going to cause you significant problems. Google has confirmed that mobile friendliness is a ranking factor. It is always best to prioritise responsive design to ensure your website will always be adaptable for whatever screen size the user is on.

10. New content is required to rank highly

Content plays a significant role in Google rankings, but this doesn’t mean you need to be writing new content constantly to improve your rankings. What is really needed is fresh and updated content, which doesn’t necessarily mean new. As information is always changing, fresh content is always preferred by search engines like Google.
